Scottish Schools Visit 2025
By Leigh Ellis - Director of Marist Education
Brother PJ and I had the privilege of embarking on a meaningful visit to Scotland to connect with the three Marist schools: St John’s in Dundee, St Mungo’s in Glasgow, and St Joseph’s in Dumfries in January. Our journey was marked by warm hospitality, inspiring encounters, and a deep sense of Marist spirit alive in each school community.
We were graciously hosted by the principals, teachers, and students of each school, who welcomed us with great enthusiasm. It was a joy to tour their campuses, witness the vibrant student projects, and engage with their Marist Leadership teams. Each visit provided a unique insight into how Marist values are embedded in the daily life of the schools, fostering a strong sense of identity, service, and faith among students and staff alike.
A key part of our visit was being guided by Brother Brendan Geary, whose deep knowledge and passion for Marist Education enriched our experience - as well as being an excellent teacher for new Scottish words! We were also introduced to Eileen O’Neil, who is currently working on an exciting book documenting the history of the Marists in Scotland. Her dedication to preserving and sharing this legacy is a testament to the lasting impact of the Marist mission.
One of the highlights of our journey was the breathtaking Scottish countryside that accompanied us on our travels between the schools. However, even more rewarding was the opportunity to meet students on their home ground. Their energy, enthusiasm, and pride in being part of the Marist family were truly inspiring. Their commitment to their schools and projects reaffirmed the strength of the Marist tradition in Scotland.
Another special moment was visiting retired Marist Brothers Charles Gay and Wilfrid. Their wisdom, stories, and continued connection to the Marist mission were deeply moving, reminding us of the lifelong dedication of the Brothers to education and service.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the principals who warmly welcomed us: Megan Gardner from St Mungo’s, Sean Hagney from St John’s, and Bernadette Jones from St Joseph’s. Their leadership and commitment to Marist education are evident in the thriving school communities they nurture. We wish them, their staff, and their students every success for the remainder of the school year and a positive and fulfilling 2025.
Our visit to Scotland was a testament to the strength of the Marist network and the shared commitment to education, faith, and service. We leave with a deep appreciation for the dedication of the Scottish Marist schools and look forward to continuing our collaboration in the future.
