District Mission Council

The District Mission Council is at the heart of Marist Education in West Central Europe, guiding and strengthening our shared mission across Ireland, Germany, Scotland, The Netherlands, and Belgium. Made up of Marist educators, laypeople, and Marist Brothers, the council plays a key role in shaping the future of our schools, organisations and communities. Through discernment, decision-making, and creative initiatives, the members of the Mission Council seek new ways to bring Marcellin Champagnat’s vision to life, ensuring that young people continue to grow in faith, service, and leadership. Their work fosters collaboration across our district, connecting and inspiring those committed to the Marist way.

Marist Leadership Program

One of our most established projects for our young people is the Marist Leadership programme. Each year ten senior students participate in the programme where they are involved in Charity projects, Marist initiatives inspired by our values and learning about the Marist heritage.

Student gain leadership training and grow in confidence. The Marist Education team have worked in conjunction with the Kinharvie Institute over the past eight years to facilitate this training, Irish and Scottish schools have participated in the programme and a highlight for many of our students is having the opportunity to travel to L’Hermitage for a pilgrimage during October.

The History of the Marists and Marcellin Champagnat

The Marist story began in 1817 with St. Marcellin Champagnat, a French priest with a deep passion for education and a heart for young people, especially those most in need. From humble beginnings, he and his small community of Brothers laid the foundations of what would become the global Marist family. Today, the Marist mission continues in schools, social works, and ministries around the world, always guided by Champagnat’s vision of making Jesus known and loved through education, simplicity, and a spirit of family. As we carry this legacy forward, we remain committed to shaping the hearts and minds of young people in a changing world.
